Learning How To Catch A Mole

By Deborah Morris

Moles are pests that homeowners have to deal with quite frequently. Beautiful lawns sometimes have a difficult time staying that way when these pests are on the loose. These varmints may be small in nature, but they can reek havoc in a small amount of time. Many have pondered in their mind how to catch a mole.

Moles can build tunnels very quickly and in no time destroy a lawn. A person can actually catch a mole either by killing it, or not causing any harm. This can be done through the use of traps or chemicals. It is best to look for mole activity early in the morning. Although they are on the move all times of the day, most of their activity occurs at that time.

Looking for tunnels in yard is the next step needed to trap the uninvited visitor. Once located, step on a few spots in order to flatten the soil. It will be a lot easier to check the next morning. If any of those areas are raised, it means that the rodent is very much active and on the move.

Now, if one decides to use the trap method, make sure to dig a whole that is a little bit wider than that of the trap diameter in a specific section. Choosing a spot that is at least 18 inches away from one of the dirt mounds is best. Look to see if the tunnel is about 8 inches below the surface. Try locating a deeper tunnel by taking a stick and pushing it into the ground. If the soil collapses, there may be a deeper tunnel present.

Now in order to set the trap, all that needs to be done is to build a mound of soil on top of the center of the hole. Set the trap on it and the mole will think that the tunnel is blocked. Once he starts digging, this sets off the trap. In order for the trap to succeed, set it where the trigger pan presses against the soil mound.

Make sure to sprinkle dirt over the trap to cover up any light that might penetrate through it. The mole will instantly know if something is wrong if this happens. Check daily to see if the anything has been captured. If so, get rid of it quickly. Make sure to wear gloves for protection. If need be, call pet control to help with disposal.

A gentler way would be simply to make a repellent to keep moles away. This can be made by mixing one half cup of Castor oil and one half cup of dish washing detergent. Combine this with a gallon of water. Keep it in a spray bottle for easy retrieval.

Make sure to look for tunnel entrances and spray on areas where there seems to be frequent activity such as around flowerbeds or grassy areas. This will force the moles to move to another location. Just be patient. Pretty soon that beautiful lawn that once existed will one day be restored.
