Tips On Marine Toilet Odor Control

By Greg Haus

It is of top priority that regular cleaning of the lavatory is maintained to ensure that it always smells fresh and is clean. This helps avoid accumulation of harmful bacteria and bad smells emanating from the system, in this article, some marine toilet odor control procedures are explained to help guide you in maintaining the cleanliness of your facility.

It is uncommon to find such lavatories producing a bad stench. One main source of such a smell is usually the discharge hose. The smell is produced once the discharge hose becomes permeable. To solve the issue, it needs to be replaced with a better one. To confirm if the hose is producing the smell, rub it with a damp and clean cloth, if it has a bad smell then the hose needs to be replaced.

Leaking connections can also be a source of the bad smell. The process using a clean damp cloth is repeated to confirm that the connections are leading to the bad smell. Often around the piston rod seal is the main area affected by bad smells due to poor connections. At times tightening the seal can help reduce the stench but a times replacement of the seal is the only option.

The bad smell can also be as a result of grass or marine life trapped in the passage of the flush water. They are often trapped under the rim of the bowl. These organisms can either be dead or alive but will still result in a bad smell. To handle this problem, a strainer is installed in the intake line to filter the organisms from the water so as to clear it.

The anti-siphon valve in the discharge lines can also be the cause of the bad odors. The valve vents should thus be properly installed outside the cabin area so as to avoid the bad smells at your home due to the valves. For situations in which the main cause of the bad smells is not identified, the main action used to handle the issue is an overhaul of the whole system.

Flushing the head with salt water should also be avoided as the salt water leads to accumulation of scale deposits on the hoses and discharge channels which with time allow the water to leak back into the bowl from the discharge line when they accumulate on the valves and also block the whole system. Monthly use of white vinegar can help control the problem.

The best option of clearing the calcium is through using acid. The acid is easily available and simple to use. Furthermore, it does not corrode any of the surfaces except metal which only happened with frequent use. The acid use can be repeated till the calcium is completely cleared. Lubrication using oil may also be needed for the leather parts and also to make the internal rubber supple.

Keeping your lavatory clean and smelling fresh is not an easy task but with the above guidelines in the article, you can do so. The tasks are fairly easy as you can do them yourself. However, for any problems that you cannot understand or solve, you should contact an expert to address the problem instead. This will help you avoid causing further damage to the system as you try repairing it.
