Great Indoor Gardening Ideas To Soothe The Winter Blues

By Laura Hall

For people who love to garden, the winter months can be challenging and somewhat depressing. A good alternative to waiting until spring to plant may be to bring your garden inside. You don't have to be a professional gardener to have beautiful plants throughout the year. There are simple indoor gardening ideas for seasoned planters and those who are new to the hobby.

Cooking with fresh herbs is a great way to create healthy, tasty meals, but the grocery store costs can be out of reach. With a little imagination, basic tools, and a couple of hours, you can create an herb wall. You need to purchase some inexpensive shelving, which is easy to attach to any wall. Choosing a wall that gets good sun will help your plants flourish.

There are great ways to repurpose old dressers and taking the drawers out and using them for planters is one of them. You can repaint or strip and varnish the old drawer, replacing the hardware if it suits you. A couple of holes need to be drilled into the bottom of the drawer so water can drain. Once that is done, plant some of your favorite flowers or start your plants from seeds. All it needs is a sunny spot and sturdy stand.

You may or may not be familiar with kokedamas, but they are great green ideas for those with limited space. These are actually Japanese bonsais. The little plants root in a mixture of balled moss and soil wrapped in an intricate string web. You may have to experiment, but once you get the knack, you can hang the established plants in windows or from ceilings.

If you want to start with a smaller project, you could make your own terrarium with some plants, soil, rocks, and an old glass teapot. Only certain plants, with shallow root systems, will work. Choosing something colorful will add interest to your project.

If you are a wine drinker, you have probably thought you should do something creative with the empty bottles. It is not hard to turn them into interesting plant holders with a little ingenuity. You will need a glass cutter to cut the bottles in two sections. After sanding the cut edges smooth, invert the top part into the bottom. This will become your basic planter.

Gardeners who are also handy with a hammer and saw can create a great hanging planter in the bathroom where the steam from the shower will turn it into a virtual rain forest. You will need a wood box, chicken wire, fiberglass screens, chain, and hangers in addition to the plants. Suspending it from the ceiling will give you the feeling you are in the middle of the jungle.

The winter months sometimes seem longer than they are. Bringing something green, living, and natural into your home is a great way to brighten up your home and mood. You won't have to wait for spring to enjoy planting your garden.
